Appendices A & B: Law and Gospel Blended in Ellen White's Testimony

Ellen White's statements from 1888 onward confirm and reinforce Prescott's conclusion that the law and the gospel, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, must always be preached together as a perfect, blended whole for the third angel's message to go with power.

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Compiled from the EGW 1888 Materials, these appendices show that Ellen White independently affirmed the very insight Prescott had just published in 'The Law in Christ.' Her 1896 letter to Uriah Smith, written days after his final installment appeared, teaches that the law is to be seen from the mercy side rather than merely the prohibitory side, and that as received in Christ it becomes the believer's own idea, lifting him above sin's power. From Minneapolis in 1888 onward she repeatedly insisted that 'the law and the gospel are so blended that the truth cannot be presented as it is in Jesus' without uniting them, and that 'the law is the gospel of Christ veiled; the gospel of Jesus is nothing more or less than the law defined.' Appendix B gathers her statements that the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus in Revelation 14:12 are of equal importance in the third angel's message; the commandments had been proclaimed, but the faith of Jesus—Christ as sin-bearer and sin-pardoning Saviour—had been left comparatively untouched. The lesson for evangelism today is unmistakable: any preaching of law without the gospel, or gospel without the law, mars and marginalizes the very message God has committed to His people for these last days.

Key points

  • Ellen White's June 1896 letter to Uriah Smith, written days after Prescott's article, teaches that the law is received in Christ and viewed from its mercy side.
  • She repeatedly stated that the law and the gospel are so blended that neither can be preached rightly without the other: 'The law is the gospel of Christ veiled.'
  • In Appendix B she insists the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus in Revelation 14:12 must be given with equal force, since the faith of Jesus has been comparatively neglected.
  • The lesson for evangelism today is that proclaiming only half the third angel's message—law without gospel, or gospel without law—mars the message God intends to lighten the earth with His glory.

Key texts

  • Revelation 14:12
  • Galatians 3:24
  • Psalm 119:165

From the book

Sermon 9 · The Third Angel's Message · Read this chapter

  • “The law and the gospel are so blended that the truth cannot be presented as it is in Jesus, without blending these subjects in perfect agreement.” (sermon 9)
  • “The law is the gospel of Christ veiled, the gospel of Jesus is nothing more or less than the law defined, showing its far-reaching principles.” (sermon 9)
  • “The commandments of God have been proclaimed, but the faith of Jesus Christ has not been proclaimed by Seventh-day Adventists as of equal importance, the law and the gospel going hand in hand.” (sermon 9)

Put it into practice

  • Examine whether my own understanding and teaching present the law and the gospel as one blended whole, not divorced from each other.
  • Give the faith of Jesus—confidence in Christ as sin-bearer and sin-pardoning Saviour—equal emphasis with the commandments in my witness.
  • Ask God for the Spirit's power to proclaim the third angel's message in all its parts, as Ellen White urged, so it may lighten the earth with glory.
