Study 17 of 25

The Sabbath Rest

The Sabbath is God's seal of rest in Christ's finished work, not a legalistic badge separating the saved from the lost.

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Sequeira argues that 150 years of correct Sabbath preaching has made little impact because Adventists usually present it merely as a fourth-commandment obligation, which sounds legalistic to Dispensationalist Christians who believe the law ended at the cross. He insists the real Sabbath/Sunday issue is not a contest between denominations but between total dependence on Christ's finished work and human self-dependence, the very principle behind Satan's rebellion and the Fall. At Creation, God's rest represented His perfect, finished work, which Adam and Eve could only receive by faith, not add to; the Fall replaced God-dependence with self-dependence and toil. Sequeira urges compassion toward sincere Sunday-keeping believers, noting most who will be saved throughout history have kept Sunday in ignorance while genuinely trusting Christ. Only in the final crisis, once the gospel has been fully preached, will the Sabbath become God's seal of righteousness by faith and Sunday the mark of self-righteous rebellion.

Key points

  • The Sabbath doctrine has made little impact on Christendom because it is usually presented as law-keeping rather than gospel rest.
  • The real controversy is not Sabbath-keepers versus Sunday-keepers but God-dependence versus self-dependence, rooted in the Fall.
  • At Creation, the Sabbath represented God's finished, perfect work, which Adam and Eve could only receive by faith, not improve upon.
  • Only at the close of probation, after the gospel is preached worldwide, will the Sabbath/Sunday issue become the final test of righteousness by faith versus self-righteousness.

Key texts

  • Genesis 2:1-3
  • Romans 9:31-33
  • Matthew 24:14

From the book

Chapter 17 · Belief 20 · Read this chapter

  • “The real issue, therefore, regarding Sabbath and Sunday is not between Sabbath-keeping and Sunday-keeping Christians, for both groups belong to Christ. The real issue is between God's people who are resting exclusively in Christ and those in the world who prefer total self-dependence.” (ch. 17)
  • “Adam and Eve could add nothing to God's creation; they could simply receive it with joy by entering into God's rest.” (ch. 17)
  • “They kept the wrong day, but they kept it for the right reason — to honor the resurrected Christ.” (ch. 17)

Put it into practice

  • Present the Sabbath to others in terms of resting in Christ's finished work, not merely fourth-commandment obligation.
  • Extend genuine Christian fellowship to sincere Sunday-keeping believers rather than treating the issue as us-versus-them.
  • Use the weekly Sabbath as a practiced exercise in ceasing self-dependent striving and trusting God's provision.
  • Study the connection between Creation rest and redemption rest so your Sabbath-keeping stays gospel-centered.
  1. Comprehension

    1. Why does Sequeira say the Sabbath doctrine has made little real impact on Christendom despite 150 years of correct preaching?

  2. Scripture

    2. According to Genesis 2:1-3, what did God's rest on the seventh day at Creation represent?

    3. How does Sequeira reframe the real issue at stake in the Sabbath/Sunday controversy?

  4. Contrast

    4. Contrast the two ways Sequeira says the law of God (and by extension the Sabbath) can be viewed, and how this applies to the fourth commandment.

  5. Doctrinal Clarity

    5. How does Sequeira trace the connection between the Fall and humanity's loss of Sabbath rest?

  6. Application

    6. What attitude does Sequeira urge Adventists to take toward sincere Sunday-keeping Christians?

  7. Comprehension

    7. When will the Sabbath/Sunday issue become the final test, according to Sequeira?

  8. Application

    8. In what areas of your life do you still operate from self-dependence rather than resting fully in Christ's finished work, as Sabbath rest pictures? What would change this week if you truly entered God's rest?
