Chapter 1—Reform Movement Within the Church (Part 2)

The remedy for Laodicean poverty: receiving Christ's imputed and imparted righteousness by faith.

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

The Laodicean message does not leave the church in despair but provides an effective remedy for its spiritual destitution. The True Witness offers 'gold tried in the fire' (faith and love), 'white raiment' (Christ’s righteousness), and 'eyesalve' (spiritual discernment). At the heart of this remedy is the doctrine of justification by faith, where the sinner’s guilt is exchanged for Christ’s perfect merit. This is not a mere legal transaction but a transformative union with Jesus. Justification provides our title to heaven, while sanctification—a lifelong process of growth in grace—provides our fitness for heaven. The 'white raiment' represents both the imputed righteousness that covers our past and the imparted righteousness that works within us to produce a Christlike character. We cannot achieve this through self-effort; it is a gift received by faith, which is the 'hand that clasps God’s power.' The secret of victory lies in a daily, moment-by-moment surrender to Christ, allowing His indwelling presence to overcome sin within us. By looking to the cross, we find the motivation and the power to renounce self and walk in newness of life, ensuring that we reflect the image of Jesus fully before the close of probation.
