Study 07 of 8

Fitting Activities to Abilities Without Limiting God

God supplies the fitness for the work He calls a person to do, so leaders should match tasks to ability while never underestimating what God can do through anyone who tries.

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Experience shows God enlarges the abilities of those who work with Him beyond human expectation, as with Gideon the poor thresher, and with a modern trainer who nearly discouraged a seemingly unable trainee who went on to see seven baptisms and became a full-time literature evangelist. The booklet's caution is to fit activities to abilities but never let that assessment limit what God can do, since many gifts are not discovered until someone is challenged to stretch beyond their comfort. Secret 14 insists that many members would witness if only they were taught how to begin, and the best teaching method is on-the-job training: a trainer takes a trainee along, models the work, then gradually hands over responsibility, following a simple weekly structure of devotion, instruction, practical work, and reflective afterglow. The booklet warns that Satan loves to keep potential workers endlessly in classes and seminars rather than in real practice. Secret 15 teaches successful methods rooted in Christ's own approach — mingling with people, meeting needs, winning confidence, and only then inviting them to follow Him — covering everything from using FORT (Family, Occupation, Religion, Testimony) to opening a visit, to leading someone to a decision before teaching the testing truths. Finally, Secret 16 reminds leaders that motivation collapses quickly when needed materials such as Bible study guides or tracts are not kept visible, organized, and readily available.

Key points

  • God supplies fitness, talent, and courage to those who cooperate with Him, so leaders should fit tasks to ability without limiting what God can do through anyone willing to try.
  • The best teaching method is on-the-job training in which an experienced worker models the task and gradually hands responsibility to the trainee.
  • Christ's method — meeting needs, winning confidence, then calling 'Follow Me' — is the pattern for successful, motivating witness training.
  • Practical materials such as Bible study guides and tracts must be kept visible, organized, and always available, or motivation quickly dies.

Key texts

  • Judges 6:15-16
  • Matthew 4:19
  • Mark 5:19

From the course book

Secrets 13–16 · pp. 20–24 · Open the reader

  • “The Lord imparts a fitness for the work to every man and woman who will co-operate with divine power.” (p. 20)
  • “There should not only be teaching, but actual work under experienced instructors.” (p. 21)
  • “Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people.” (p. 22)

Put it into practice

  • Match new workers to activities suited to their apparent gifts, but give them room to attempt more and surprise you.
  • Pair experienced workers with trainees in a weekly on-the-job class of devotion, instruction, fieldwork, and shared afterglow.
  • Teach Christ's method: meet needs, win confidence, then invite a decision to follow Him before pressing testing truths.
  • Keep Bible study guides, tracts, and other materials neatly stocked and visible in the church lobby and classrooms at all times.

  7. Comprehension

    7. Why does the booklet caution that 'the devil loves to keep potential soul winners in training classes and seminars, to the exclusion of actual practice'?

  8. Application

    8. Personal: Which member in your church might be underestimated in ability, and what small step could you take to stretch and encourage them the way the trainer eventually did?
