A Better Word Than Abel

Hebrews 1:1-4; 12:24 — Christ the final and superior revelation of God

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Hebrews opens like a trumpet: God, who spoke in many ways through the prophets, has in these last days spoken by His Son — the express image of His person, upholding all things by the word of His power, who by Himself purged our sins and sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Every previous revelation was partial and preparatory; Christ is final and complete. The chapter's climax, echoed later in 12:24, contrasts the blood of Abel, which cried for vengeance, with the blood of Jesus, which speaks better things — mercy instead of judgment. This is the argument of the whole epistle in miniature: whatever the old covenant offered in shadow, Christ offers in substance, and whatever cried for justice, His blood answers with grace. Righteousness by faith rests on this superior Mediator whose sacrifice actually purges sin rather than merely covering it ceremonially.
