Synopsis
James is often set against Paul, but rightly understood he completes rather than contradicts him: 'faith without works is dead, being alone.' James is not describing works as the ground of justification but as the necessary evidence of genuine faith — a faith that produces no change in behavior toward the needy is merely intellectual assent, the kind even demons possess. Abraham is his example, but notice the order: Abraham 'believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness' (Genesis 15) long before he offered Isaac (Genesis 22); the offering of Isaac is proof, not the cause, of the righteousness already credited by faith. James and Paul agree completely once we see that Paul opposes works as the root of justification while James insists on works as its fruit. Righteousness by faith, rightly preached, never produces indifference to human need — it produces exactly the kind of active love James describes.
I. The problem posed
- Can faith without works save? (2:14)
- A brother or sister naked and destitute
- 'Be warmed and filled' without meeting the need (2:16)
II. Dead faith exposed
- Faith alone, without works, is dead (2:17)
- Even the devils believe and tremble (2:19)
- Belief without transformation is not saving faith
III. Abraham's faith demonstrated
- Abraham believed and was justified long before Isaac's offering (Gen 15:6)
- Works justified — that is, proved — his faith before others (2:21)
- Faith wrought with his works, and by works faith was made perfect (2:22)
IV. Faith and works in harmony
- Rahab justified by works also (2:25)
- As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead (2:26)
- Genuine faith always issues in visible love
The faith that saves you is never a faith that leaves you unmoved by human need. Let your faith today prove itself alive by reaching out in love to someone who needs it.
