Love, the Greatest Gift

1 Corinthians 13 — Love as the necessary fruit and proof of genuine gospel faith

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Amid the Corinthians' pride in spiritual gifts, Paul inserts this hymn to love, showing that without it, the most spectacular gifts are empty noise. Tongues, prophecy, knowledge, even sacrificial giving and martyrdom, profit nothing without love — a shocking claim to those who measured spirituality by gifted performance. Paul then describes love positively: patient, kind, not envious, not puffed up, not seeking its own, not easily provoked, bearing, believing, hoping, and enduring all things. This is not sentimental affection but the character of Christ Himself, reproduced in believers as the fruit of grace received. The chapter closes with love's permanence — prophecies, tongues, and knowledge shall cease, but love never fails, because it belongs to the eternal nature of God. Righteousness by faith is not opposed to love but produces it; a faith that does not issue in this love is not saving faith at all.
