Synopsis
Paul closes his great argument on justification with a shout of liberty: 'There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.' The law could expose sin but never remove it, weakened as it was by our flesh. What the law could not do, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, condemning sin in the flesh so that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us. This is not a license to sin lightly but a declaration that guilt's legal claim has been fully answered at Calvary. The Spirit of life now indwells the believer, replacing condemnation with communion. Righteousness by faith means the gavel of judgment has already fallen on Christ, and the one hiding in Him hears only acquittal.
I. The verdict declared
- "No condemnation" — a legal pronouncement
- For those "in Christ Jesus"
- Union with Christ, not personal merit, is the basis
II. The law's limitation
- The law is holy but powerless to save
- Weak through the flesh, not through fault in itself
- Exposing sin without removing it
III. The remedy provided
- God sending His own Son in the flesh
- Sin condemned in the flesh of Christ
- The righteousness of the law fulfilled in us
IV. The life that follows
- Walking after the Spirit, not the flesh
- The Spirit of life replacing the law of sin and death
- Freedom that produces holiness, not license
If you are in Christ today, the verdict is already in — no condemnation. Stop living under a sentence that has been reversed at the cross, and walk in the freedom the Spirit gives.
