Poured Out as a Drink Offering

2 Timothy 4:1-8 — Finishing the course in the assurance of imputed righteousness

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

From a Roman prison awaiting execution, Paul writes his final words to Timothy, charging him to preach the word in season and out of season, for a time is coming when sound doctrine will be exchanged for teachers who tickle itching ears. Paul then turns to his own end: 'I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.' There is no fear here, only the calm confidence of a man who has fought, finished, and kept — and who now looks entirely to a crown 'which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me.' Note carefully: the crown is not wages for Paul's labor but a gift from a righteous Judge, laid up for all who love Christ's appearing. This is righteousness by faith at its most triumphant, a life poured out completely because its confidence rested not in its own record but in the righteous Judge who gives the crown.
