A Righteousness That Exceeds

Matthew 5:17-20; Matthew 5:21-22 — Christ fulfills the law and calls for heart-level righteousness by grace

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Jesus declares He came not to destroy the law and prophets but to fulfil them, and then astonishes His hearers by insisting that unless their righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, they cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. The Pharisees' righteousness was meticulous in outward conduct yet often untouched at the level of the heart, and Jesus immediately illustrates this by moving from the command 'thou shalt not kill' to its root: unjustified anger and contempt toward others. This is not Jesus raising the bar to make salvation harder to earn by effort; it is Jesus exposing that the law was always meant to govern the heart, a depth no self-effort can reach and only grace can supply. He Himself is the fulfiller of the law's demands, both in perfect obedience and in bearing its penalty, and the righteousness that exceeds the Pharisees' is precisely His own righteousness credited to those who trust Him. True kingdom righteousness, then, is not an achievement believers must reach on their own but a gift received that transforms behavior from the inside out.

  1. I. The law fulfilled, not destroyed

    • "I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil"
    • Every jot and tittle matters to God
    • Christ as the law's perfect keeper
  2. II. A righteousness that must exceed

    • The Pharisees' outward, meticulous conduct
    • Exceeding cannot mean merely trying harder
    • Christ's own righteousness as the standard met for us
  3. III. The heart beneath the command

    • "Thou shalt not kill" traced to anger and contempt
    • Outward conformity without inward change is insufficient
    • The law exposes the heart's real condition
  4. IV. Grace supplying what law demands

    • The law shows the need; grace meets it
    • Christ's righteousness imputed and imparted
    • Transformation from inside out, not outside in
The appeal

You cannot out-perform the Pharisees by trying harder; you need a righteousness not your own. Will you receive Christ's perfect righteousness today, letting Him transform your heart rather than merely your outward conduct?

Key points

  • Christ fulfills the law perfectly rather than abolishing its moral demands.
