Synopsis
Paul describes humanity's condition before Christ as dead in trespasses and sins, walking according to the course of this world, by nature children of wrath even as others. This spiritual death is total, leaving no capacity for self-rescue. But God, rich in mercy, for His great love, made us alive together with Christ — the very verb underscoring that we contributed nothing, since dead people cannot cooperate in their own resurrection. The classic statement follows: 'For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.' Even faith itself is highlighted as gift-received, not merit-generated. Yet grace does not end in passivity; believers are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God prepared beforehand for us to walk in. This is the full circle of righteousness by faith — dead sinners raised, freely justified, and purposefully transformed for a life of good works that flow from, not earn, salvation.
