Stephen: Grace Under Fire

Acts 7:51-60 — Grace enables faithful witness even unto death

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, stands before the very council that condemned Christ and delivers a sweeping sermon tracing Israel's history of resisting the Spirit, climaxing in the charge that they have now betrayed and murdered the Just One. Rather than softening the truth to save his life, Stephen presses the indictment home, and the enraged council drags him out and stones him. Yet as the stones fall, Stephen looks steadfastly into heaven and sees Jesus standing at the right hand of God — a posture of active welcome for His faithful martyr. His final words mirror Christ's own on the cross: 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit,' and 'Lord, lay not this sin to their charge,' extending forgiveness even to his murderers. Righteousness by faith reaches its fullest earthly expression here — grace so fills a believer that even violent death cannot provoke bitterness, only Christlike intercession for the persecutors.

    • Kneeling down, crying with a loud voice

    • Christlike intercession for persecutors
    • Saul consenting, yet a seed later used by grace
The appeal

Stephen's grace under fire flowed from a life already surrendered to Christ. Whatever opposition you face for truth, will you let Christ's grace fill you so fully that even persecution produces intercession, not bitterness?
