Synopsis
Knowing that His hour had come and that the Father had given all things into His hands, Jesus rose from supper, took a towel, and washed His disciples' feet — a task reserved for the lowest servant. This act, performed on the very eve of His crucifixion, reveals that supreme power and supreme humility are not opposites but companions in Christ's character. Peter's initial refusal shows how uncomfortable pride is with grace received rather than earned, yet Jesus insists, 'If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me,' teaching that we must first receive His cleansing before we can serve others. Having demonstrated His love in this way, He commands, 'Ye also ought to wash one another's feet,' establishing humble, sacrificial service as the mark of true discipleship. Righteousness by faith is not only received at the cross but is expressed daily in a life of Christlike humility toward others.
