The Curse Become a Blessing

Galatians 3:10-14 — Christ's redemption from the law's curse to bring the Spirit's blessing

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Paul argues that all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, since the law demands perfect and continual obedience — 'Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.' No one meets this standard, so the law can only condemn those who seek righteousness through it. But 'Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.' Christ took the covenant curse of crucifixion upon Himself, satisfying the law's demand in our place. The purpose is stated clearly — that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. This passage shows that the cross is not merely forgiveness but a legal transaction whereby the curse due us was transferred to Christ, and the blessing due Him was transferred to us.
