Synopsis
Matthew opens his Gospel not with a birth announcement but with a genealogy, and hidden in that list are four women — Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and 'her that had been the wife of Urias' — each touched by scandal, foreignness, or shame. Matthew is preaching the gospel before he preaches a word, showing that the Messiah's lineage runs straight through broken, ordinary, and even disgraced people. This is not a genealogy of merit but of grace, proving that God has always worked salvation through unlikely instruments. If Christ can be born into this family tree, He can be born into any heart, however stained its history. The genealogy ends in verse 16 with a deliberate shift in language, 'Jesus, who is called Christ,' breaking the pattern of 'begat' to show that His origin is different — divine, not merely human. Righteousness by faith begins here: God writes His own name into a sinful family so sinners might be written into His.
I. A list of surprising names
- Tamar's desperate scheme (Genesis 38)
- Rahab the harlot of Jericho
- Ruth the Moabite outsider
II. A pattern of grace, not merit
- No genealogy is edited to hide sin
- God's covenant runs through the unworthy
- Grace, not pedigree, secures the promise
III. A deliberate break in the pattern
- "Begat... begat..." changes at verse 16
- Joseph is not said to beget Jesus
- The virgin birth marks a new kind of birth
IV. A family for every sinner
- If they belong, so can you
- Christ's roots reach into our mess
- Grace adopts us into this same lineage
The Messiah's family tree includes the shamed and the outcast, so there is room in it for you. Will you let Christ, born of this grace-filled line, be born also in your heart today?
