The Man of Sin Revealed

2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 — Christ's return and the danger of counterfeit righteousness

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Paul writes to correct a panic: some in Thessalonica believed the day of the Lord had already come. He calms them not with speculation but with truth — a great apostasy and the revealing of 'the man of sin' must precede Christ's return, a system that exalts itself above God while wearing the trappings of worship. Paul's concern is pastoral before it is prophetic: he wants believers established, not shaken, by end-time teaching. The heart of the chapter is the contrast between a lie believed with pleasure in unrighteousness and the truth loved and obeyed unto salvation. Righteousness by faith stands guard here — every counterfeit gospel substitutes human authority or performance for Christ's finished work, and only love for the truth protects the soul from deception. God's people are sanctified through belief of the truth and the Spirit, not through fear of prophecy alone.
