Synopsis
Before ascending, Jesus commands His disciples not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the Father, the baptism of the Holy Spirit that would clothe them with power for witness. This is a crucial corrective for any believer tempted to rush into service on human energy alone — the Great Commission is never fulfilled by human strategy but by divine enabling. The scope of their coming witness is deliberately expansive: Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the earth, a pattern that still defines the church's mission today. As Jesus ascends, two angels rebuke the disciples' skyward gazing with a promise: He shall so come in like manner as He went. Righteousness by faith is not passive; it is the very power that transforms forgiven sinners into empowered witnesses, moving from fear-filled hiding to bold proclamation once the Spirit is received.
