Synopsis
Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with a sobering warning: not everyone who says 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, and some who prophesied and cast out demons in His name will hear the terrifying words, 'I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.' This is not a contradiction of salvation by grace through faith but its necessary companion — genuine faith always produces a life of doing the Father's will, while impressive religious activity without relationship is merely performance. Jesus concludes with the parable of two builders: one hears His sayings and does them, building on rock that withstands the storm; the other hears the same words but does not do them, building on sand that collapses catastrophically when tested. The storm represents the trials and the final judgment that reveal what kind of foundation a life was actually built upon. This closing parable insists that hearing sound doctrine is not enough; saving faith is always doing faith, not because obedience earns salvation, but because it is the inevitable fruit of a life truly transformed by grace.
I. The warning against empty profession
- "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord"
- Impressive works without relationship
- "I never knew you"
II. Doing the Father's will
- Profession must be matched by obedience
- Religious activity is not proof of relationship
- Knowing Christ, and being known by Him
III. The wise builder on the rock
- Hearing Christ's sayings and doing them
- The storm comes to every house alike
- The rock foundation stands firm
IV. The foolish builder on the sand
- Hearing the same words, but not doing them
- Appearance of stability until the storm
- Great was the fall of that house
It is not enough to hear these words; Jesus calls you to build your life on Him by doing what He says. Will you let today's hearing become obedient doing, so your house stands firm when the storm comes?
