Crossing the Jordan

Joshua 3:7-17 — Faith that steps into the water before it parts

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Israel stood before a river in flood, with forty years of wandering behind them and a land of promise ahead. God's command was not to wait for the water to part but for the priests bearing the ark to step into it. The Jordan is a picture of every barrier that stands between promise and possession — death, sin, fear — and Joshua teaches that faith moves toward the obstacle before it sees deliverance. Christ is the true Ark going before His people into every deep water, sanctifying the way by His own presence. The stones taken from the riverbed become a perpetual sermon to the next generation: God who opened Jordan is the same God who will open every future crossing. The Christian life is a series of Jordans, each requiring the same principle — the feet must get wet before the waters withdraw.

  1. I. The command to advance before the miracle

    • The priests were told to step in, not to wait on dry ground
    • Obedience preceded the parting, not the reverse
    • Faith acts on the word before it sees the result
  2. II. The ark leading the way

    • The presence of God went ahead of the people
    • Christ, our true Ark, has already entered every death we face
    • We follow a leader who has gone before, not one who sends us alone
  3. III. The memorial of twelve stones

    • Each tribe carried a stone from the riverbed
    • The monument taught children what God had done
    • Remembering past deliverance fuels faith for future crossings
  4. IV. Sanctification before the crossing

    • Joshua called the people to sanctify themselves
    • God's wonders are seen by a consecrated people
    • Preparation of heart precedes the display of power
The appeal

Whatever Jordan lies before you today, the call is the same as it was at Gilgal: step into the water in the name of the One who has already conquered it. Do not wait for certainty before you obey; obey, and certainty will follow you into the land.
