Synopsis
Few passages in Scripture reach as deep into the heart of the gospel as this one. God asks Abraham to do the very thing He Himself would one day do: offer up an only, beloved son. Every step of the three-day journey to Moriah was a slow crucifixion of Abraham's own understanding, yet he obeyed, reasoning that God was able to raise Isaac even from the dead (Hebrews 11:19). Isaac, old enough to carry the wood for his own sacrifice, becomes an unmistakable type of Christ carrying His own cross. At the critical moment, a voice from heaven stays Abraham's hand, and a ram caught in a thicket becomes the substitute — the moment Abraham names the place 'Jehovah-jireh,' the Lord will provide. Centuries later, on that same mountain range, the Father would not stay His own hand, because there was no ram in the thicket for His Son. Calvary is the answer to Isaac's innocent question: 'Where is the lamb?'
I. A Test That Mirrors the Cross
- 'Take now thy son, thine only son... whom thou lovest'
- The language deliberately parallels John 3:16
- God asks of Abraham what He would do Himself
II. A Son Who Carries the Wood
- Isaac carries the wood for his own sacrifice
- A vivid type of Christ bearing His own cross
- Willing submission of the son mirrors Christ's own
III. A Question Answered at Calvary
- 'My father... where is the lamb?'
- Abraham's answer: 'God will provide himself a lamb'
- Fulfilled fully when John the Baptist points to Christ (John 1:29)
IV. A Substitute Found and a Name Given
- The ram caught in the thicket dies in Isaac's place
- Jehovah-jireh — 'the Lord will provide'
- The Father did not spare His own Son, unlike Abraham (Romans 8:32)
On that mountain, Abraham found a ram to take his son's place, but on Calvary's mountain, no substitute was found for the Father's Son — because He was the substitute for you and me. If God did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also, with Him, freely give us all things? Will you trust today in the Lamb God Himself has provided?
