Hosea's Unfailing Love

Hosea 2:14-20; 11:1-4, 8-9 — God's covenant love pursuing a faithless people

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

God commands Hosea to marry Gomer, a woman who would prove unfaithful, so that Hosea's marriage would become a living parable of God's covenant love for spiritually adulterous Israel. Despite Israel's idolatry, God says, 'I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her... I will betroth thee unto me for ever.' In chapter 11, God recalls how He taught Ephraim to walk, took them by the arms, but they did not know He healed them; and yet His heart turns within Him, His compassions kindle together, and He cries, 'How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? ... mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.' Hosea reveals the emotional depth of God's love — not a distant deity dispensing justice mechanically but a grieving, pursuing Husband and Father whose covenant love refuses to let go even when every human ground for love is gone, foreshadowing the cross where that pursuing love reached its climax.
