One Door, One Way

Genesis 6:9-22; 7:1-16 — The ark reveals salvation as God's provided way, entered by faith and shut by God's own hand

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Noah's world had grown so violent and corrupt that God determined to cleanse the earth, yet even in judgment He provided a way of escape. The ark was not Noah's idea but God's design, down to its dimensions and materials; Noah's righteousness lay in believing and obeying that design rather than inventing his own. For 120 years he preached while he built, and the door stood open to all who would come. When the appointed day arrived, 'the Lord shut him in' — salvation sealed not by human effort but by divine hand. The ark had only one door, one way in, prefiguring the single door of salvation that is Christ Himself. Those inside were as safe as those outside were lost, not because of personal merit but because they were found within God's provided means of escape.

  1. I. One Design

    • God specifies every measurement of the ark
    • Noah's obedience, not innovation, was his righteousness
    • Salvation's plan is God's, not man's invention
  2. II. One Door

    • A single entrance for all who would be saved
    • The door stood open during the years of building
    • Christ declared, 'I am the door' (John 10:9)
  3. III. One Sealed Company

    • 'The Lord shut him in' (Genesis 7:16)
    • Safety inside had nothing to do with size or strength
    • The same water that destroyed the world buoyed the ark upward
  4. IV. One Warning Preached in Time

    • Noah, a preacher of righteousness (2 Peter 2:5)
    • 120 years of patient witness alongside patient building
    • Delay of judgment is opportunity, not evidence of its absence
The appeal

The door of the ark stood open for over a century, and then it closed forever — not by Noah's hand but by God's. Today the door of mercy in Christ still stands open to you, but Scripture warns that a day is coming when it too will close. Will you enter now, while there is still time, and find yourself sealed in by grace rather than shut out by delay?

Key points

  • Salvation follows God's design, not human improvisation.
