Rebuilding the Wall

Nehemiah 4:6-9, 15-18 — God's work advances through prayer joined with practical vigilance

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

As the wall rose, opposition rose with it — mockery from Sanballat, conspiracy from surrounding enemies, and discouragement from within Judah's own ranks. Nehemiah's response combined unwavering trust in God with unwavering common sense: 'we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night.' Half the builders worked while half stood guard, each worker keeping a weapon at hand even while laboring. This balance refutes both the presumption that prayer alone excuses practical preparedness and the anxiety that practical preparedness can substitute for prayer. Faith is not passive, and diligence is not faithless; both together build the wall. The Christian life likewise advances only as believers pray fervently and simultaneously guard vigilantly against the enemy who never stops opposing God's work.

  1. I. Opposition that intensifies as the work advances

    • Mockery escalates to conspiracy
    • The nearer completion, the fiercer the resistance
    • Satan's opposition to God's work is proportional to its progress
  2. II. The refusal of presumption

    • Prayer alone was not treated as sufficient without watchfulness
    • They 'made our prayer... and set a watch'
    • Faith does not despise practical wisdom
  3. III. The refusal of anxious self-reliance

    • Watchfulness alone was not treated as sufficient without prayer
    • Trust in God undergirded every practical measure
    • Diligence does not replace dependence
  4. IV. A people working with a weapon in hand

    • Half labored, half stood guard
    • Every builder remained armed and alert
    • The Christian life requires labor and vigilance together
The appeal

The work God has given you will meet opposition the closer it comes to completion. Do not let prayer become an excuse for carelessness, nor let vigilance crowd out dependence on God. Pray earnestly, and keep your sword in hand as you build.

Key points
