Synopsis
When the temple stood finished, Solomon did not boast in cedar and gold; he knelt and confessed that the heaven of heavens cannot contain God, let alone a house of stone. Yet he asked that God's eyes be open toward that house, toward every prayer prayed facing it, toward every sinner who turned there in repentance. The temple was never meant to localize God but to give guilty people a place to look while trusting a Mediator they could not yet see. Christ is the true temple, the place where God's fullness dwells bodily, and where every believer's prayer now finds its hearing. Solomon's plea, 'when they shall turn again to Thee... and confess Thy name,' previews the whole gospel of forgiveness offered to the truly penitent, of every nation, not Israel alone.
