The Day Death Entered the Garden

Genesis 3:1-15 — The fall begins with distrust of God's word and ends with a promise of a Redeemer

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Sin did not begin with an apple; it began with a question that made God's word sound uncertain: 'Yea, hath God said?' Once Eve doubted God's goodness, disobedience was only a formality. The tragedy of Eden is not merely a broken rule but a broken relationship, and its symptoms appear immediately: shame, hiding, blame, and fear. Yet even as the divine sentence falls, grace speaks first. Before God addresses the serpent's punishment or Adam's toil, He announces the seed of the woman who will crush the serpent's head. Genesis 3:15 is the gospel in embryo, spoken in Eden's ashes before a single sacrifice was offered. The coats of skin that clothed our naked parents came at the cost of a life — the first funeral in Scripture becomes the first sermon on substitution.

  1. I. The Question That Poisoned Trust

    • 'Yea, hath God said?' undermines certainty
    • Doubt of God's word precedes every sin
    • The serpent still attacks Scripture's reliability today
  2. II. The Choice That Broke Communion

    • Eve deceived, Adam knowingly chose
    • Immediate shame and hiding replaced fellowship
    • Fig leaves — man's first attempt at self-made righteousness
  3. III. The Promise That Preceded Punishment

    • Genesis 3:15 spoken before the curses are detailed
    • The seed of the woman versus the seed of the serpent
    • Enmity itself is a gift of grace, turning hearts back to God
  4. IV. The Covering That Cost a Life

    • Fig leaves fail to cover shame
    • God Himself provides coats of skin
    • The first death in Scripture points forward to the Lamb
The appeal

Every heart still hides among the trees, ashamed and afraid, hoping fig leaves of good behavior will cover what only blood can cover. God is calling, 'Where art thou?' not to condemn but to clothe you in a righteousness not your own. Will you step out of hiding and receive the covering He has already provided in Christ?

Key points
