The Decree of Cyrus and the Return

Ezra 1:1-5 — God stirs the hearts of kings and captives alike to accomplish His purposes

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Seventy years of prophesied exile ended not by Israel's political maneuvering but by God stirring the spirit of a pagan king. Cyrus, unaware he was fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy spoken more than a century before his birth, issued a decree releasing the captives and encouraging the rebuilding of the temple. Simultaneously, God stirred the spirits of the exiles themselves, moving them to actually rise up and go despite comfort in Babylon. This double stirring — of ruler and remnant alike — displays God's sovereign ability to work through and beyond human governments to fulfill His word. It reassures believers that no earthly power, however dominant, can ultimately obstruct what God has promised. The return from exile pictures the greater deliverance from the exile of sin that Christ accomplishes, calling His people to rise and return.

  1. I. A prophecy fulfilled to the letter

    • Seventy years, spoken by Jeremiah, fulfilled precisely
    • God's word outlasts empires
    • Prophecy is history written beforehand
  2. II. A pagan king unknowingly serving God's plan

    • The Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus
    • Government and rulers remain under God's sovereignty
    • God can use the willing and the unwilling alike
  3. III. A remnant stirred to rise and return

    • Comfort in Babylon might have kept many home
    • God stirred the exiles' own spirits to act
    • Deliverance requires a willing response, not passivity
  4. IV. A pattern of every true exodus

    • Exile ends by God's initiative, not human effort alone
    • Christ calls His people out of spiritual Babylon
    • Every believer must personally rise to return
The appeal

God who stirred a pagan emperor's heart to free His people can move any obstacle standing between you and full return to Him. Will you also let Him stir your own heart to actually rise and go, rather than settling comfortably in spiritual exile?
