Synopsis
Jeremiah 31 introduces the new covenant, quoted in full in Hebrews 8, marking the most decisive statement in the Old Testament about how God intends to save His people. The old covenant, made at Sinai, was broken because the people, though redeemed, tried to keep God's law in their own strength. The new covenant promises something different: 'I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts... and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.' This is not a new set of rules but a new relationship in which obedience flows from a transformed heart, not external pressure. It includes intimate knowledge of God ('they shall all know me') and complete forgiveness ('I will remember their sin no more'). The new covenant is really the everlasting covenant of grace, made effective through the blood of Christ, and it stands at the very center of righteousness by faith — God does for us in Christ, and in us by the Spirit, what the law could only demand.
I. The failure of the old covenant
- "Which my covenant they brake"
- A covenant of external law without internal power
- Israel's history of relapse
II. The promise of the new covenant
- The law written on the heart, not tablets of stone
- Motivation from within, not compulsion from without
- "I will be their God, and they shall be my people"
III. The intimacy of knowing God
- "They shall all know me, from the least to the greatest"
- Direct relationship, not mediated distance
- Personal, experiential knowledge, not mere information
IV. The completeness of forgiveness
- "I will forgive their iniquity"
- "I will remember their sin no more"
- A finished, not repeated, atonement
God is offering to write His law on your heart today, not just to give you rules to follow. Will you surrender to the new covenant relationship, letting Him be your God from the inside out?
