The Priest Who Came Before the Law

Genesis 14:17-20 — Melchizedek foreshadows a priesthood of righteousness and peace greater than the Levitical order

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

In the aftermath of battle, a mysterious king-priest named Melchizedek appears without genealogy, without recorded beginning or end in the text, bringing bread and wine to bless Abram and receiving a tenth of the spoils. His name means 'king of righteousness,' his title 'king of Salem' means 'king of peace,' and his priesthood predates and outranks the entire Levitical system by centuries. The writer of Hebrews seizes on this brief encounter to demonstrate that Christ's priesthood, like Melchizedek's, does not depend on ancestry or the Aaronic line but on the power of an endless life. Abram's tithe to Melchizedek, offered before the law of tithing was codified at Sinai, shows that recognizing and honoring a superior priesthood is itself an act of faith. This ancient encounter quietly announces, a thousand years before Aaron, that ultimate righteousness and peace come through a priest of God's own appointing, not human lineage.

  4. IV. A Superior Priesthood Recognized by Faith

    • Abram tithes to Melchizedek before Sinai's law existed
    • Faith recognizes and honors what law later codifies
    • Hebrews 7 argues Christ's priesthood surpasses Aaron's
The appeal

Long before there was a temple, an altar of bronze, or a Levitical priest, God revealed that ultimate righteousness and peace would come through a priest of His own eternal appointing. That priest is Christ, who ever lives to bless you with the bread and wine of His broken body and shed blood. Will you receive His blessing today, honoring Him as Abram honored Melchizedek — by faith, before every question is answered?
