Synopsis
The Preacher tested wisdom, pleasure, labor, and wealth, finding each ultimately 'vanity' — vapor, fleeting, unable to satisfy the soul's deepest longing. His relentless honesty is itself a gift: Scripture does not pretend that life 'under the sun,' lived as though this world were all there is, can deliver lasting meaning. Yet the book does not end in nihilism. Its conclusion redirects the search: remember your Creator in the days of your youth, and after every experiment has been tried, fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes prepares the heart for the gospel by exhausting every alternative to it, showing that only a right relationship with God, and ultimately with Christ who fulfills all righteousness, can answer what 'under the sun' experience never can.

IV. The conclusion of the whole matter
