Study 01 of 12

Session 1—The Church as Christ's Body

Every officer and member is a vital part of Christ's body, uniquely gifted by the Spirit for the collective mission of the church.

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

The Seventh-day Adventist Church recognizes that the church is not merely an organization, but the living body of Christ. Just as a human body has many members with different functions yet remains one, so the church is composed of diverse individuals united in purpose. The apostle Paul emphasizes that every part—no matter how small or hidden it may seem—is indispensable. When one member suffers, the whole body suffers; when one is honored, all rejoice. This biblical model transforms our view of church office: leadership is not about status, but about specialized service that enables the whole body to grow. God has placed spiritual gifts in the church to equip the saints for the work of ministry. Whether you are an elder, a treasurer, or a personal ministries leader, your role exists to foster the spiritual health of the community and to project the love of Christ to the world. The goal of all church organization is 'the edifying of the body of Christ' until we all reach maturity. In this light, 'every member a minister' is not just a slogan; it is the fundamental blueprint for a healthy, mission-driven congregation. By accepting a role, you are stepping into a divinely ordained function that contributes to the life and movement of the entire body.
