Study 02 of 12

Session 2—The Pastor and the Elders

Elders and pastors provide spiritual oversight, acting as shepherds to feed the flock and lead the church in mission.

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

The office of the elder is one of the highest callings in the local church, second only to the pastor in spiritual leadership. The elder is called to be a shepherd, providing oversight and care for the members' spiritual well-being. This involves a commitment to deep prayer, the study of the Word, and a blameless life that serves as a model for the congregation. While the pastor is often the primary preacher and administrator, the elders work in close partnership to ensure that every member is nurtured and the church's mission is advancing. Together, they form the spiritual leadership team that guides the church board and shapes the vision of the congregation. Practical duties of the elder include assisting with the ordinances—such as the Lord's Supper and baptism—visiting the sick and discouraged, and presiding over church meetings in the pastor's absence. The elder must be a 'man of one wife' (or a woman of character where appropriate), temperate, and able to teach. They are not merely administrators; they are spiritual guardians who must be ready to give a defense of the faith and protect the flock from false teachings. By leading with humility and a servant's heart, elders and pastors create an environment where the Holy Spirit can work to transform lives and grow the kingdom of God.
