Deacons and deaconesses serve the church through practical care for members, the sanctuary, and the community.

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

The office of deacon and deaconess dates back to the early Christian church, where they were appointed to handle practical matters so the apostles could focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word. In the Seventh-day Adventist Church, these officers are vital to the smooth functioning and compassionate outreach of the congregation. Their work is characterized by physical service and a heart for the needy. Whether it is ensuring the church building is ready for worship or visiting members in their homes, deacons and deaconesses are the 'hands and feet' of Jesus within the church body. Key responsibilities include assisting in the service of the Lord's Supper (preparing the emblems and handling the foot-washing service), welcoming visitors, and maintaining the church property. Beyond the building, deacons and deaconesses are often the first to identify and respond to the needs of the poor, the sick, and the grieving. By managing the church's benevolence funds and coordinating practical assistance, they demonstrate the love of God in tangible ways. Like the elders, deacons and deaconesses must meet high spiritual standards, being people of integrity who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.
