Peace, Be Still

Mark 4:35-41 — Faith resting in Christ's presence amid life's storms

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Evening falls, and Jesus asks His disciples to cross the sea, then falls asleep in the boat while a great storm arises and threatens to swamp it. The disciples' terror-filled cry, 'Master, carest thou not that we perish?' reveals a faith that doubts Christ's care even in His very presence. Jesus rises, rebukes the wind, and says to the sea, 'Peace, be still,' and immediately there is a great calm — power that belongs to God alone over creation. His question back to them, 'Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?' exposes that the real problem was not the storm but their unbelief. This narrative teaches that Christ's presence in the boat did not prevent the storm but guaranteed its outcome; righteousness by faith means resting in who is with us rather than measuring the size of the waves. The disciples' amazed question, 'What manner of man is this?' invites every reader to recognize the divine authority of Christ over the chaos of our lives.
