One Thing Thou Lackest

Mark 10:17-27 — The impossibility of self-salvation and the sufficiency of grace

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

A young ruler runs to Jesus, kneels, and asks the ultimate question: 'What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?' His question betrays a works-based assumption, and Jesus first probes his understanding of goodness before listing commandments the man claims to have kept from his youth. Jesus, loving him, exposes the one thing he lacks — total surrender, symbolized by selling all he has and following Christ. The man goes away sorrowful, for he had great possessions, showing that his obedience to the law was never complete; he had kept the letter while breaking the first commandment by loving wealth above God. The disciples' astonished question, 'Who then can be saved?' receives Christ's profound answer: 'With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.' This encounter dismantles every hope of self-achieved righteousness and points to salvation as entirely God's gracious work, received not earned.

  1. I. The question that assumes self-effort

    • "What shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
    • A sincere but works-based approach
    • Running and kneeling, yet missing the point
  2. II. The law that exposes incompleteness

    • "One thing thou lackest"
    • Wealth as his hidden idol
    • Perfect law-keeping is impossible for fallen hearts
  3. III. The sorrow of unsurrendered wealth

    • He went away grieved
    • Great possessions held him captive
    • Sorrow without repentance changes nothing
  4. IV. The impossibility turned possibility

    • "Who then can be saved?"
    • "With men it is impossible"
    • "But not with God... all things are possible"
The appeal

Whatever you are trusting to earn eternal life — your morality, your possessions, your religious record — Jesus says, 'One thing thou lackest.' Surrender it all to Him today, for what is impossible for you is entirely possible with God.

Key points

  • No amount of law-keeping can produce the total surrender salvation requires.
  • Whatever we cling to instead of Christ becomes the idol that keeps us from Him.
  • Salvation is impossible by human effort but entirely possible through God's grace.
