The Widow's Two Mites

Mark 12:41-44 — God measures giving by faith and sacrifice, not amount

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Jesus sits opposite the temple treasury observing how people give, and while many rich cast in large sums, a poor widow drops in two mites, the smallest coins in circulation. Jesus calls His disciples to notice her and declares that she has cast in more than all the others, because they gave of their abundance while she, out of her poverty, gave all she had, even her whole living. This is not a lesson in fundraising but a parable of faith: the widow's gift pictures the total, trusting surrender that righteousness by faith requires — holding back nothing, trusting God to provide for tomorrow. The rich gave what they would not miss; she gave what she could not spare, and in doing so showed a heart wholly given to God. Christ's evaluation overturns worldly standards of value, measuring gifts not by their size but by the faith and sacrifice behind them, just as He measures our whole lives not by outward show but by the surrender of the heart.

  1. I. The setting of observation

    • Jesus sits opposite the treasury
    • He watches how, not just what, people give
    • God sees the heart behind every gift
  2. II. The contrast of giving

    • The rich cast in of their abundance
    • The widow casts in two mites — all she had
    • Outward amount versus inward sacrifice
  3. III. The verdict of Christ

    • "She hath cast in more than they all"
    • Giving measured by what remains, not what is given
    • God's economy inverts human valuation
  4. IV. The picture of total surrender

    • "Even all her living"
    • Trusting God for tomorrow's need
    • A type of full consecration to God
The appeal

God is not counting the size of your gift but weighing the surrender of your heart. Will you, like this widow, trust Him enough to give not merely from your abundance but from your very life?

Key points

  • God evaluates giving by sacrifice and faith, not by visible amount.
  • True consecration holds nothing back, trusting God for future provision.
