Synopsis
John roots all Christian love in its source: 'God is love,' and He 'sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him... to be the propitiation for our sins.' Love, in this passage, is defined entirely by initiative — 'herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us' — so that human love for God and neighbor is always response, never origin. Because 'no man hath seen God at any time,' the proof that His love dwells in us is love for one another, made perfect as it flows outward. This love produces astonishing confidence: 'as he is, so are we in this world,' and 'perfect love casteth out fear,' for fear involves torment born from doubting one's standing before God. The believer who rests in the finished propitiation of Christ has 'boldness in the day of judgment' now, not merely hoped for later — righteousness by faith transforms judgment day from a terror into an already-settled matter.

IV. Love's necessary companion

God loved you first, sending His Son as the full propitiation for your sin — you do not need to fear judgment day if you rest in that love. Will you receive His love today so fully that fear gives way to boldness, and let that love overflow to others?
