Walking in the Light

1 John 1:5-2:2 — Fellowship, confession, and the advocate who cleanses from all sin

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

John declares the foundational truth: 'God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.' Fellowship with such a God is impossible while walking in darkness and claiming otherwise is self-deceiving lying. But the same light that exposes sin also provides for it: 'if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.' John anticipates the danger of denying sin altogether ('if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves') and answers it with the promise of confession: 'if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' Then, so believers will not misuse grace as license, John adds the Advocate: 'if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous,' who is Himself the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but for the whole world. This passage holds together in perfect balance the reality of ongoing sin, the sufficiency of continual confession, and the finished propitiation that makes forgiveness certain.

  1. I. God is light

    • In Him is no darkness at all
    • Fellowship impossible while walking in darkness
    • Claiming sinlessness while in darkness is self-deception
  2. II. Fellowship and cleansing in the light

    • Walking in the light brings fellowship with one another
    • The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin
    • Ongoing cleansing, not a one-time event only
  3. III. The necessity and promise of confession

    • 'If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves' (1:8)
    • 'If we confess... he is faithful and just to forgive' (1:9)
    • Cleanse us from all unrighteousness, not merely some
  4. IV. The Advocate and propitiation

    • Jesus Christ the righteous, our Advocate with the Father
    • The propitiation for our sins
    • Not for ours only, but for the whole world
The appeal

God is faithful and just to forgive you the moment you confess, because Jesus Christ your Advocate has already made propitiation for your sin. Will you step out of hiding and into His light today, confessing honestly and receiving full cleansing?

Key points

  • Genuine fellowship with God requires walking in the light, not denying sin.
