The Bread of Life

John 6:26-51 — Christ as the only sustenance for eternal life

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

The crowd that had eaten of the multiplied loaves sought Jesus again the next day, but He redirects their hunger from physical bread to the true bread that endures unto everlasting life. When they ask for a sign like the manna, Jesus declares, 'I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger.' This claim moves salvation from external provision to personal appropriation — bread must be eaten, not merely admired, just as Christ must be received by faith, not merely observed. The manna in the wilderness perished and the fathers who ate it died, but this bread from heaven gives life that death cannot touch. Righteousness by faith means feeding daily on Christ, drawing life continually from Him rather than from a single past experience. He who comes will never hunger; he who believes will never thirst — a promise of ongoing satisfaction, not a one-time transaction.

  1. I. The wrong hunger identified

    • Seeking Jesus for bread that perishes
    • Laboring for meat that endures unto everlasting life
    • The Father's seal upon the Son
  2. II. The true bread declared

    • "I am the bread of life"
    • He that cometh shall never hunger
    • He that believeth shall never thirst
  3. III. The contrast with manna

    • Manna sustained physical life temporarily
    • The fathers who ate manna still died
    • This bread gives eternal life
  4. IV. The bread given for the world

    • "My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world"
    • A sacrifice, not merely a teaching
    • Personal appropriation required — coming and believing
The appeal
