Living Water for a Thirsty Soul

John 4:1-26 — Christ meets the outcast sinner with grace, not condemnation

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Jesus, wearied with His journey, sits at Jacob's well and asks a Samaritan woman for a drink, crossing every barrier of race, religion, and reputation to reach one thirsty soul. He offers her living water that becomes in the receiver 'a well of water springing up into everlasting life,' contrasting it with the temporary satisfaction of Jacob's well. When He exposes her broken marital history, He does so not to shame her into hiding but to lead her to truth and worship 'in spirit and in truth.' She leaves her waterpot — a picture of forsaking the old, insufficient source — and becomes an evangelist to her own village. This encounter shows righteousness by faith reaching the most unlikely candidate: no merit, no religious pedigree, only honest thirst met by Christ's initiating grace. He who knew her whole story still offered her living water freely.
