Repentance and Remission of Sins Among All Nations

Luke 24:44-49 — The risen Christ commissions His church to preach a global gospel

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

In His final recorded words in Luke's gospel, Jesus opens the disciples' understanding to see that His suffering, death, and resurrection were foretold throughout 'the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms,' confirming that the entire Old Testament pointed to this climactic gospel event. From this foundation He issues the mission of the church: 'that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.' This commission joins repentance and remission inseparably — the gospel is not merely an announcement of forgiveness but a call to turn from sin and receive it. The disciples are commanded to be 'witnesses of these things,' testifying to what they had personally seen and experienced, not secondhand theory. Crucially, Jesus tells them to tarry in Jerusalem until they are 'endued with power from on high,' teaching that gospel proclamation is impossible in human strength alone but requires the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This passage establishes the pattern for all gospel ministry: Scripture-grounded truth, Spirit-empowered witness, and a universal call to repentance and forgiveness for all nations.

  1. I. The Scripture-grounded gospel

    • "All things must be fulfilled" in Moses, prophets, and psalms
    • Christ's suffering and resurrection were foretold, not accidental
    • Understanding opened by Christ Himself
  2. II. The message to be preached

    • Repentance and remission of sins joined together
    • Preached "in his name" — Christ's authority alone
    • "Among all nations" — the universal scope of the gospel
  3. III. The witnesses commissioned

    • "Ye are witnesses of these things"
    • Testimony from personal experience, not theory
    • Beginning at Jerusalem, then to the ends of the earth
  4. IV. The power promised for the task

    • "Tarry... until ye be endued with power from on high"
    • The Spirit as the necessary equipping for mission
    • Human effort alone cannot accomplish gospel proclamation
