Come; For All Things Are Now Ready

Luke 14:15-24 — The gospel invitation refused by the self-satisfied, received by the needy

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

A man makes a great supper and sends his servant to tell the invited guests, 'Come; for all things are now ready,' yet one by one they offer excuses rooted in property, business, and family — legitimate concerns of life used as reasons to reject the invitation of grace. The master's anger sends the servant into the streets and lanes of the city to bring in the poor, maimed, halt, and blind, and when there is still room, out into the highways and hedges to compel others to come in, that the house may be filled. This parable, told in response to a guest's pious remark about the blessedness of the kingdom feast, warns that those who assume their invitation and standing are secure often forfeit it through complacency and competing priorities, while the outcasts who know they have nothing to offer gladly receive what is freely given. The declaration that none of the original invitees 'shall taste of my supper' is a solemn warning that rejecting grace, however politely excused, has eternal consequences, while the gospel finds its true home among the humble and needy who recognize their desperate need for what only grace can supply.

  1. I. The invitation extended

    • "Come; for all things are now ready"
    • The feast prepared entirely by the host
    • An invitation, not a demand for merit
  2. II. The excuses that reject grace

    • Land, oxen, and marriage — legitimate concerns misused
    • Polite refusals still refusals
    • Competing priorities crowd out the invitation
  3. III. The compassion that seeks the needy

    • The poor, maimed, halt, and blind brought in
    • Highways and hedges — compelling the overlooked
    • Grace reaches those with nothing to offer in return
  4. IV. The solemn warning of forfeited grace

    • "None of those men... shall taste of my supper"
    • Complacent assumption of standing can forfeit it
    • The house will be filled, with or without the self-satisfied
The appeal

All things are now ready — the invitation to Christ's feast stands open today. Do not let good things become excuses for refusing the best thing; come now, just as you are, for the table is prepared and there is room for you.
