Synopsis
A month after their miraculous deliverance, Israel complained of hunger, and God responded not with rebuke alone but with provision: bread rained from heaven every morning. The manna taught daily dependence — it could not be hoarded, for what was kept overnight (except before Sabbath) bred worms and stank. God wanted His people learning to trust Him fresh each day, not living off yesterday's grace. Christ later applied this directly to Himself: 'I am the bread of life... your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead... this is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.' The manna sustained physical life for forty years but could not conquer death; only Christ, the true Bread, gives life that never ends. The double portion gathered before Sabbath also anticipated the sanctity of the seventh day even before Sinai, showing God's care to provide rest without labor on His holy day.
