Exodus 14:10-31 — Salvation by divine power alone, not human effort

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Trapped between Pharaoh's army and the sea, Israel could do nothing but stand still and watch. Moses' instruction, 'Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord,' summarizes the essence of righteousness by faith — deliverance is not achieved by frantic human effort but received by trusting surrender to a God who fights for His people. Yet standing still was followed by a command to move: 'Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward.' Faith is never passive fatalism; it walks into the opening God provides even before the full outcome is visible. The sea that divided to save Israel became, moments later, the very water that destroyed Pharaoh's army — the same event brings salvation to the trusting and judgment to the defiant. Baptism later draws directly on this imagery, as Paul says Israel was 'baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea,' showing that this deliverance prefigures the believer's death to the old life and rising to walk in newness with Christ.

  1. I. The impossible situation

    • Sea before, army behind
    • Human strategy utterly exhausted
    • The perfect setting for divine deliverance
  2. II. The call to trust

    • "Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord"
    • Fear replaced by confidence in God's promise
    • Salvation is the Lord's to give, not ours to earn
  3. III. The call to move

    • "Go forward" — faith is active, not passive
    • Walking into the opening before seeing the end
    • Obedience in the direction of the promise
  4. IV. The dividing waters

    • Salvation for the trusting, judgment for the defiant
    • The same sea, two opposite outcomes
    • A picture of baptism into a new life
