Joshua the High Priest Clothed

Zechariah 3:1-5 — Justification pictured in the courtroom of heaven

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Zechariah's fourth vision places Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, clothed in filthy garments, with Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. This is a courtroom scene of justification. The Lord Himself rebukes Satan, and though the accusation is technically accurate — Joshua's garments truly are filthy, representing Israel's and the priesthood's sin — the Lord answers on the ground of grace: 'Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?' The filthy garments are removed, and Joshua is clothed with a change of raiment while the Lord declares, 'I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee.' This is justification portrayed exactly as Paul would later explain it — not a denial of guilt but a legal removal of guilt and a positive clothing with a righteousness not one's own, so that the accused can stand accepted in the very presence of the Judge. It also anticipates Christ's priestly ministry, since Joshua represents a priesthood that itself needed cleansing before it could minister for others.

  1. I. The accusation raised

    • Joshua standing before the angel of the Lord
    • Satan standing at his right hand to resist him
    • Filthy garments — an accurate accusation
  2. II. The rebuke given

    • "The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan"
    • "Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?"
    • Grace answering a true charge
  3. III. The garments removed

    • "Take away the filthy garments from him"
    • "I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee"
    • Guilt legally and actually removed
  4. IV. The righteousness bestowed

    • Clothed with a change of raiment
    • A fair mitre set upon his head
    • Standing restored to minister before God
The appeal

Like Joshua, you stand accused by an accurate charge — you are a sinner. But the same Lord who rebuked Satan offers to remove your filthy garments and clothe you with His own righteousness. Will you let Him dress you today?

Key points

  • Justification removes real guilt and clothes the sinner with a righteousness not their own.
  • Satan's accusations against believers, though often factually accurate, are answered by grace.
  • Standing before God depends on Christ's provided righteousness, not self-defense.
