The Messenger of the Covenant

Malachi 3:1-3; 4:1-2 — The refining ministry of Christ before the great day of the Lord

Hands-free narration of this study — good for the car.

Synopsis

Malachi closes the Old Testament canon with a message that bridges directly into the New Testament's opening scenes. God promises to send His messenger to prepare the way, and then 'the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in.' But His coming is not merely comforting; it is refining: 'he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap... he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver.' Malachi 4 completes the picture with both terror and hope in the same image — the coming day 'shall burn as an oven' for the proud and wicked, yet for those who fear God's name 'the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings.' The prophecy closes the Old Testament with Elijah's promised return to turn hearts before that day, fulfilled in John the Baptist. Malachi thus stands as a fitting capstone to the whole Old Testament witness: the same God who reasoned, wept, promised, judged, and pursued His people throughout the prophets is the One coming as both refining Judge and healing Sun of righteousness.

The appeal

The Messenger of the covenant is coming — as refining fire to some, as healing sunrise to others. The difference is not in His character but in how we receive His refining work now. Will you let Him purify you today so His coming is healing, not terror?
